KIN 371: Introduction to Statistics in Kinesiology Assignment 2 (Total Marks: 53 marks) Overview The purpose of this assignment is to a) develop and enhance students’ learning of statistical concepts discussed in class and in the textbook by working with real data and b) provide students with an opportunity to learn how to conduct statistical analyses using statistical software. Emphasis will be placed on students’ ability to accurately calculate and interpret statistical concepts. Students are allowed to work in groups (no more than three students per group) or chose to complete the assignment independently. When working in groups, students will submit only one final copy of the assignment for grading and each group member will receive the same grade for the submitted assignment. It is expected that each student will have contributed to the submitted assignment. Groups and individuals must submit unique and distinct assignments from other groups and/or individuals. Students should complete the JASP tutorials on ‘Independent Samples t-Test in JASP’ and ‘Paired Samples t-Test in JASP’ to learn how to conduct these analyses using JASP. These tutorials are posted on Canvas and will provide students with the ability to complete the assignment (along with the textbook and lecture notes). All calculated answers should be rounded to two decimal places. Description of the data: KIN 371 students (assume they were randomly sampled) completed a questionnaire. Students were asked three questions: 1. Did you participate in organized sport outside of school sport (e.g., played for your school team) in high school? • Response options were ‘Yes’ and ‘No’. • This variable is labelled as ‘Organized Sport’ in the assignment 2 data file. 2. How many hours did you spend engaging in moderate-vigorous physical activity during reading break (Monday-Sunday)? • This variable is labelled as ‘PA Reading Week’ in the assignment 2 data file 3. How many hours did you spend engaging in moderate-vigorous physical activity in the first week of January (Monday-Sunday)? • This variable is labelled as ‘PA first week of January’ in the assignment 2 data file The Task: Researchers were interested in two research hypotheses: Hypothesis 1 Students who participated in organized sport outside of school sport in high school will engage in more hours of moderate-vigorous physical activity during their reading break compared to students who did not participate in organized sport outside of school sport in high school. Hypothesis 2 Students will participate in more hours of moderate-vigorous physical activity in a week during the first week of January compared to reading break. Your task is to address both research hypotheses by selecting the appropriate statistical analysis and drawing a conclusion. For both of the research hypotheses you need to complete the steps below. I would strongly recommend completing all of the steps for one hypothesis and then turn your attention to the second hypothesis. Step 1. a) Select and state the appropriate statistical analysis given the research hypothesis (1 mark x 2 = 2 marks). b) Using JASP, produce appropriate frequency distribution tables of the data. (2 marks x 2 = 4 marks). c) Is there problematic data? Explain your answer (1 mark x 2 = 2 marks). Step 2. a) State the null and alternative hypotheses (assume two-tailed, alpha = .05; 2 marks x 2 = 4 marks) b) Sate the decision rule for the analysis if you were to conduct the statistical analysis by hand (2 marks x 2 = 4 marks) c) Using JASP, conduct the appropriate statistical analysis given the research hypothesis (two-tailed, alpha = .05). Include the JASP output of the t-table in your assignment write up. d) Check and discuss the assumptions of the analysis you conducted (e.g., what were the assumptions based on the analysis? Were the assumptions met?; 5 marks x 1 + 2 marks x 1 = 7 marks). Please include the JASP output for any assumption checks you did using JASP. e) Write a concluding statement based on your analysis (6 marks x 2 = 12 marks). f) Relate the result of the analysis to the research hypothesis (1 mark x 2 = 2 marks). Step 3. a) Calculate and report the 95% confidence intervals for each sample mean in the analysis you conducted in step 2. Show the formula that you used to calculate the 95% confidence interval and the main values within the formula (e.g., the mean, standard error, t) (4 marks x 2 = 8 marks). b) Using JASP, create a descriptive plot with 95% confidence intervals and include it in your assignment write up (1 mark x 2 = 2 marks). c) Based on you work in steps 3 a) and 3 b), do the intervals between samples overlap (1 mark x 2 = 2 marks)? What do you think this overlap or lack of overlap means (2 marks x 2 = 4 marks)? Important Reminders 1. Your assignment is due: Wednesday March 11, 2020 at 8:00am 2. Please include a title page that states the assignment number, and names and student numbers of all students in the group. 3. If you decide to work in a group, only submit 1 assignment per group. To do so, you must self-enrol each group member into an ‘Assignment 2’ group. Once all members are enrolled in the group only one person should submit the assignment in Canvas. 4. Student should complete their assignment write up using a word processor (e.g., Word) and submit their assignment through Canvas. Students should not submit a hard copy. 5. Assignment 2 covers material in class and in your textbook up until and inclusive of Chapter 9 + effect size from Chapter 10.
