NRS 451 Describe the difference in roles between leadership and management

question

Question

In nursing, it is important to have nurses who are leaders and others who are assigned a role in management. A nurse who is a leader is someone who has the ability to influence those around them as well as having the ability to understand their followers. (Whitney, 2018) A nursing leader can be either formal or informal. A formal leader is someone who has been assigned by the organization and has duties outlined for them. Whereas an informal leader is someone who does not have a specific title. A nurse who is a good leader shows compassion, trust, stability and hope and obtain their power through directing and empowering others. (Whitney, 2018) “Nursing leaders are often expected to make patient care more efficient to help reduce hospital stays, lower risk of readmissions, and reduce healthcare costs” (2021).

A nurse who is in management is assigned by an organization and manages the day to day operations in nursing. (2021) They have specific duties and responsibilities and focus on tasks such as organizing, staffing, planning, supervising, making assignments, and coordinating tasks that need to be completed. (Whitney, 2018) “A nurse manager primarily focuses on keeping daily operations in the department as efficiently as possible… They supervise nurses and other staff members and provide training as needed. (2021).

There are some goals in leadership and management that overlap. Some of these goals include influencing others in a positive way, being visionary and looking towards the future, and are not narrowly focused. Ways that leaders and management might influence others in a positive way. It is important that both managers and leaders work on their critical thinking and problem-solving skills in order to make good decisions for those who they are managing or leading. By being a nursing leader, facilitating change occurs by setting an example for those who are around you as well as being someone that others can trust. Setting standards for colleges is a great way to facilitate change.

My goals for this course are to learn more about how to be a good nursing leader or nurse manager. I used to dislike the histories associated with leadership styles and documentaries concerning nursing leadership skills, but as I began this course, I found it more and more interesting, and my goal is to be successful in this course and be able to attain all of the points I can get, as well as to know what the expectations, dos and dont's in the nursing field when it comes to social media, professionalism, and achieving my goals while knowing the leadership theories and practices.
Knowledge of nurse leadership skills is also important because it directly affects the level of care the patient receives. Today’s healthcare system is changing and challenging on a daily basis. Nurse leaders must self-update in order to meet challenges today, in the coming decade, and in the future. So one of my first goals is to understand leadership and management knowledge, which will help me to grow nursing professionalism and role the organization in a positive way by utilizing knowledge, skill, and resources and leading in an effective way by influencing team members.

Describe the difference in roles between leadership and management. Explain how the goals of management and leadership overlap and provide one example. As a nurse leader, describe how you can facilitate change by taking advantage of this overlap.

Nursing leadership and management are both critical positions for any health care organization’s long-term success (Whitney, 2018). In some situations, most nurses are called to be leaders and managers. Although they share many similarities, there are some significant differences between leadership and management roles. They are discussed further below:
Similarities
Both roles necessitate strong interpersonal skills as well as strategic long-term thinking. Both managers and leaders focus on current processes and organizational structure to drive changes such as increasing efficiency and optimizing professional development of the group/subordinates/peers.

Differences
Managers frequently have specific, defined authority and power granted by the organization. Leaders do not always have the same definite assigned authority, but their power comes from their exceptional interpersonal skills and influence among their peer group as a result of their qualities. Leaders frequently have to take on more responsibilities than managers.

Overlap of Roles
In order to achieve the goals of the organization, management and leadership often have to strive towards some common objectives.

These include influencing, motivating peers and other staff to coordinate and develop core competencies to achieve set objectives. Leadership and management often have overlapping roles in planning, organizing, directing and controlling various aspects within the organization. Leadership and management also have very important roles in successfully implementing policy changes and bringing innovation.
An example of such an overlap would be bringing in of a new technology into the care process, which may cause change in existing practices and require staff to undergo new training. This may meet resistance from staff who may be not willing to make necessary changes, especially if the new policy involves more activities and documenting compared to the old one. In such cases, leadership and management roles must work together to convince why the new practice has been implemented, especially if the policy change is due to new research based on evidence based practices.

Role of nurse leaders
The success of healthcare organizations in reaching economic, patient happiness, and quality of care goals is mostly determined by nursing leadership’s leadership qualities (Anders et al., 2021). A successful nurse leader combines the attributes shown by managers and leaders to direct and implement changes, bring innovation, empower those around them. A nurse leader is able to use the influence and power vested upon them by colleagues to bring practical changes to improve practice and quality of care. Nurse leaders can assess and evaluate, create interventions where needed and promote critical thinking processes.

Hi Shiny,
For a company to succeed, I believe that both leadership and management are vital roles. Beyond you, a company’s post-leadership is critical to its vision and purpose realization. Leaders give us a sense of direction, show us the way forward, give us a sense of what we can accomplish, and give us hope and inspiration. When there is no leadership, a group of people soon degenerates into arguing and fighting since we all perceive things in different ways and prefer different approaches. It’s based on the findings of Liphadzi et al. (2016). Managing entails being in charge of a project from beginning to end. An important part of project management is planning and executing the project. Organizational management should be disciplined enough to set goals that are both clear and attainable, and the leadership abilities of project managers have a direct impact on how well a project turns out. Management, along with equipment, resources, and money, is generally considered an element in the production process (Liphadzi, Aigbavboa, & Thwala, 2017).
