Strep throat is an infection that is caused by an infection at the back of the throat. In medical terms its known as Streptococcal Pharyngitis. The below is an Ihuman case study on a patient with certain symptoms that relate to the signs and symptoms of the disease.

Primary Diagnosis: Group A streptococcal pharyngitis
Status/Condition: stable Code Status: Full Allergies: NKDA Admit to Unit: No
Activity Level: As tolerated Diet: resume previous diet IVF n/a
Critical Drips: n/a
Respiratory : O2 saturation 98% on room air- continue
Medications:
acetaminophen 650 mg PO every 6 hrs. prn for fever/pain drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol 1 tab PO daily for oral contraceptives penicillin 500mg PO BID for 10 days
Nursing Orders:
ambulation as tolerate obtain throat swab obtain RADT
Obtain influenza nasal swab
Acetaminophen 650mg PO for fever stat x1 dose Give 1st dose of penicillin 500mg PO stat
Follow Up Lab tests: n/a Diagnostic testing
RADT- rapid detection of strep but is not as sensitive as the throat culture Throat culture- preferred diagnostic test for strep
Influenza PCR nasal swab to rule out a flu diagnosis
Consults: N/A
Patient Education and Health Promotion
Educate patient on medication usage, side effects and importance of taking as prescribed Educated patient on preventing the spread of infection such as staying away from immuno compromised patients and anyone for the first 24 hours
Encourage patient to receive the flu vaccination to prevent exposure Encourage rest when necessary
Discharge planning and required follow-up care:
Follow up with PCP in 2 weeks or if call PCP if your symptoms get worse Increase fluid intake
Activity as tolerated
Take medications as prescribed
Resume activities such as work or school after taking antibiotics for 24 hours
