Words to Pages Converter

Use this words to pages converter to estimate how many pages your essay fills by font, size, spacing and margins, or check the chart below.

How to Use the Words to Pages Converter

  1. Enter your word count. Copy it from Word or Google Docs, or type the limit from your assignment.
  2. Match your formatting. Choose the font, size, line spacing, margins and paper size your instructor or style guide requires.
  3. Read the range, not just the number. The result is an estimate with a range of about 10% either way, because headings, paragraph breaks and quotes change how much fits on a page.
  4. Plan around the extras. Add pages for a title page, references or appendices if your instructor counts them.

Words to Pages Chart: Double and Single Spaced

This words to pages chart assumes US Letter paper, 1-inch margins and 12-point Times New Roman, with about 250 words on a double-spaced page and 500 on a single-spaced page. Real papers usually land within about 10% of these figures either way.

Need a number that isn't in the table? Divide your word count by 250 for double spacing or by 500 for single spacing. For 1.5 spacing, divide by about 333.

How Many Pages Is 500 Words?

About 2 pages double spaced or 1 single-spaced page. That's the length of a short response paper or a long discussion post.

How Many Pages Is 1000 Words?

About 4 pages double spaced or 2 single-spaced pages. Reflection papers and short essays often land here, and Arial or Calibri can stretch it to about 4.4 or 4.3 pages.

How Many Pages Is 1500 Words?

About 6 pages double spaced or 3 single-spaced pages, a common length for a standard college essay.

How Many Pages Is 2000 Words?

About 8 pages double spaced or 4 single-spaced pages. Analytical and argumentative essays often run this long.

How Many Pages Is 3000 Words?

About 12 pages double spaced or 6 single-spaced pages. With a title page and references added, a 3,000-word research paper can easily reach 14 pages.

How Many Words per Page?

The font and the spacing decide most of it. At 12 points with 1-inch margins on US Letter paper, a typical page of prose holds:

Approximate words per page at 12 points, 1-inch margins
FontSingle1.5 SpacingDouble
Times New Roman500333250
Arial450300225
Calibri470313235

Arial and Calibri are wider than a serif font like TNR, so fewer words fit on each line. Font size matters more than most students expect, because the space each character takes grows with the square of the size. Compared with 12 points, 11 points fits about 1.19 times as many words, 10 points about 1.44 times and 14 points about 0.73 times.

Margins and paper change the count too. Margins of 0.75 inch fit about 1.14 times as many words as 1-inch margins, 0.5 inch about 1.28 times and 1.25 inches about 0.87 times. A4 paper, common outside the US, holds about 1.04 times as much as US Letter. Your own writing also matters: headings, short paragraphs, block quotes and lists all leave white space, so treat every figure as an estimate with a range of about 10%.

Handwritten pages hold far fewer words. On college-ruled paper with average handwriting, expect roughly 200 words per page, writing on one side only.

Pages to Words: How Long Is a 3-, 5- or 10-Page Paper?

Working the other way, multiply the pages by 250 for double spacing or 500 for single spacing.

Approximate words for common page counts
PagesWords, Double SpacedWords, Single Spaced
1250500
37501,500
51,2502,500
102,5005,000
153,7507,500
205,00010,000

So how many words is 5 pages? About 1,250 on double-spaced pages, or 2,500 on single-spaced pages. A paper of 10 pages is about 2,500 words double spaced. If the prompt asks for "five full pages," the last page should be full or close to it, and the title page and references usually don't count toward the total.

The same numbers help with time. At an average reading speed of 238 words a minute, 1,000 words takes about 4 minutes to read. Spoken aloud at about 130 words a minute, it takes closer to 8 minutes, which is why a 5-minute speech needs far fewer pages than most people guess.

What Counts Toward Page Length in APA and MLA

Style guides fix the font, spacing and margins, and they also decide which pages exist besides the body. Both styles call for double spacing and 1-inch margins.

  • APA 7 student papers start with a title page listing the paper title, your name, your institution, the course number and name, your instructor and the due date, and a page number appears on every page, including the title page. The reference list begins on a new page. The style allows several fonts, including 11-point Calibri and 11-point Arial, so your words per page depend on which one you pick.
  • MLA 9 papers usually skip the title page unless your instructor asks for one. Your name, instructor, course and date go in a heading on the first page, with your last name and the page number in the top right corner. The Works Cited list goes at the end.
  • What usually doesn't count: the title page, abstract, reference list or works cited, and appendices. Many instructors count only the body text, but rubrics differ, so check yours.

For a longer guide to word limits, page limits and what to do when an assignment gives both, read page count vs word count.

How to Reach a Page Count Without Padding

Instructors notice stretched margins, oversized fonts and extra space between paragraphs, and many rubrics ask for a word count for exactly that reason. If your draft is short, add substance instead:

  • Develop your evidence. Explain why each source supports your point, not just what it says.
  • Add a counterargument. Raising and answering an objection strengthens most argumentative papers and adds a solid paragraph or two.
  • Use a specific example. A short case, data point or scenario makes an abstract claim concrete.
  • Revisit the prompt. Check every part of the question; a missed sub-question is a common reason a paper runs short.

If you're over the limit, cut repeated points and long quotes first, then tighten sentences. Changing the font or margins to squeeze a long paper under a page limit tends to break the formatting rules you were given.

Common College Assignment Lengths

Assignment lengths vary by course and instructor, so treat these as typical ranges and check your rubric for the real requirement. When a rubric gives a range, such as 4 to 6 pages, aiming for the middle leaves room to develop your points without running over. When it gives both a word count and a page count, the word count is usually the more precise target, so plan your outline around it and use the page estimate as a check.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Many Pages Is 1000 Words Double Spaced?

About 4 pages, at roughly 250 words per page with 1-inch margins and a standard serif font at 12 points. Single spaced, it's about 2 pages. Arial or Calibri push it slightly longer, to about 4.4 or 4.3 pages, and headings or short paragraphs add more. A title page and references aren't included in that estimate.

How Many Words Is a 5-Page Paper?

About 1,250 words double spaced, using roughly 250 words to a page at 12 points with 1-inch margins. Single spaced, it's about 2,500 words. Because real pages vary by about 10%, plan for 1,125 to 1,375 words, and check whether your instructor expects five full pages of body text, not counting the title page or references.

Does Font Change Page Count?

Yes. At 12 points, Times New Roman fits about 250 words on a double-spaced page, Calibri about 235 and Arial about 225, so a 1,000-word essay runs about 4.0, 4.3 or 4.4 pages. Font size has an even bigger effect: dropping to 11 points fits about 1.19 times as many words. Use the font your instructor or style guide requires.

Does the References Page Count?

Usually not. Most instructors set the length for the body of the paper and leave out the title page, abstract, references or works cited, and appendices. Some rubrics count every page, though, so check the assignment. In APA papers the reference list starts on a new page, so it never helps you fill the last page of body text.

Is a Page 250 or 275 Words?

Both numbers get used. A double-spaced page at 12 points with 1-inch margins averages about 250 words in a standard serif font, which is the safer number for planning. Pages with long paragraphs and short words can reach 275 or more, while headings, lists and quotes push the count lower. Treat any estimate as plus or minus 10%.

How Many Pages Is 500 Words Handwritten?

About 2.5 pages, assuming roughly 200 words to a page on college-ruled paper with average writing, using one side of each sheet. Large or widely spaced writing can push it to 3 pages or more, and small, tight writing may fit it on 2. Typed, the same 500 words fill about 2 pages double spaced or 1 single-spaced page.
