What is a GRE Test?

The GRE General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills — skills that have been developed over a long period and are not related to a specific field of study. In many graduate programs, the GRE General Test is just one component of the admission process in many graduate programs. The Graduate program directors use the test as a standard measuring stick — along with undergraduate transcripts, recommendation letters, personal statements, and other application information — to compare applicants who may have majored in different subject areas or earned their degrees at colleges or universities around the world. The GRE® Program offers hundreds of free test preparation resources, including the PowerPrep practice tests.

General Test is accepted by thousands of graduate and business schools worldwide. It measures the verbal, mathematical, and analytical writing skills that are needed for success in graduate or business school. With customizable test prep options that work with your schedule, you can get all the prep you need to do your best on test day.

What is a GRE test for?

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) tests to measure your verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills. The GRE General Test is for individuals interested in pursuing a master's or doctoral degree (or a college teacher-preparation program). What does the GRE consist of? The test is 3 hours and 45 minutes long.

The GRE was designed to assess your verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills. To succeed in a competitive graduate or business program, you will need to have a strong mastery of these skills. The GRE test can help you stand out during the admissions process. Admissions officers use your score to compare you with other applicants who are similar to you, and a strong score can help give you an edge. Here are the key benefits of GRE practice tests

Gre test - Verbal reasoning

The GRE test's verbal reasoning section assesses your ability to comprehend the meanings of words, sentences, and entire reading passages. You will be asked to distinguish major themes from minor points, summarize the text, and understand the text structure. Verbal reasoning is a skill that can be greatly improved by focusing on the right type of study. The GRE Verbal Reasoning Practice Test Questions is a great place to start because the questions give you an accurate picture of what to expect on the test and provide you with an opportunity to practice each of the question types in depth.

The verbal reasoning section contains questions in three formats:

Sentence Equivalence

Questions in two-blank Reading Comprehension passages ask you to fill in the blanks with the best answers to provide a complete sentence. To get it right, your answer choices must fit together and produce sentences that share similar meanings. Pro tip: Think of the blanks as slots for “something” and find choices that share that “something.”

This formula is used for problems with one or two blanks. Unlike some of the other question types, you don't need to read through the entire passage and answer choices before selecting your answers.

Text Completion

These questions consist of a reading passage. For each of the blanks, there will be three answer choices to choose from. There is only one correct answer, consisting of the correct word or phrase for each of the blanks. There is no partial credit.

If you are having trouble with these questions, start by reading the passage to gain context. Next, fill in the blank with a few words/phrases that make sense and read them in the context of the passage. Think about which one makes the most sense and is grammatically correct.

Reading Comprehension questions

In this section, you can read and answer questions about several reading passages. You will choose the best answer to each question. Practice reading comprehension questions are similar to what you will see on the SAT and ACT. Get started with a free account so you can instantly see your results and progress. We can help you learn how to approach the questions on Quant by providing a free study guide and the option to practice with questions that mimic those found on your test.

The quantitative reasoning section of the GRE test will measure your ability to analyze any issue with a mathematical foundation. The quantitative reasoning section of the GRE consists of four types of questions: numeric entry, multiple answer choices, multiple choice with more than one answers, and quantitative comparison.

GRE Test - Analytical writing section

The GRE Analytical Writing section attempts to assess your ability to clearly and effectively articulate complex ideas. You will be expected to use relevant examples and reasons to support your ideas, and you will be given evidence and asked to examine claims. To score well on the analytical writing section, you must discuss your ideas focused and coherently,. You will also need to demonstrate your ability to use proper English grammar and structure.

The GRE analytical writing section will have you write two timed responses. In the Analyze an Issue task, you will receive a topic that presents an issue. You will be asked to discuss your views on the issue and support your response with evidence from your observations, experience, and reading. In the Analyze an Argument task, you are given an argument related to a topic, such as a plan of action. You will be asked to evaluate the argument’s logic and make recommendations for how it could be improved.

To determine your writing assignment, GRE has an online 15-20 minute test that assesses your writing skills to determine your writing capabilities. This test is carefully constructed to ensure the best accuracy and is taken by each writer on the website.

How is the GRE Test scored?

For the computer-delivered test, the verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning sections have scores based on a computer-adaptive approach for the computer-delivered test. For the paper-delivered test, a raw score is converted to a scaled score by a process that accounts for differences between test editions. The three score components in the GRE General Test are Verbal Reasoning (130–170, in 1-point increments), Quantitative Reasoning (130–170, in 1-point increments ), and Analytical Writing (0–6, in half-point increments)

When you take the GRE tests, you will receive a scaled score between 130 and 170 on both the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections. Scores increase in one-point increments. The Analytical Writing section measures your critical thinking abilities, which is more difficult to score. It takes two readers to assign a score from 0-6 in half-point increments. That score is then averaged together with your other two scores for a final cumulative score. The paper-delivered test also calculates scores but accounts for discrepancies between test editions when determining scores.

Gre score report

You can see your scores immediately after you take the computer-delivered test. This is unofficial, and you have the option of not reporting them (allowing you to cancel your scores). If you choose to report your scores, they are official, and when they become available, they will be sent to the graduate schools free of charge, but only if you choose the four free score reports.

After you take a test on the computer-delivered GRE General Test, you will be asked if you want to view your unofficial Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores. Your official scores will be available approximately 10–15 days after your test date. At any time within five years after your test date, you may choose to send score reports from any or all of your GRE tests at no additional cost.

The Score Select option lets you decide which GRE test scores to send to a school at the time of your test. Or you can use Score Select anytime within five years after your test. For your four free score reports, You can choose two different options for test day. The first option enables you to hold your scores and send them later (you get five years to do that). The second option allows you to keep only the scores from your most recent GRE test date scores.

GRE Practice Test Benefits

Students should work harder and practice taking as many GRE mock tests as possible. Doing so will help them develop the habit of studying regularly. They will also understand how important time management is when taking their assessment. It would be suitable for students to take their mock tests online to have practice in front of the computer. This will help them when the time comes to participate in the actual GRE test: it will ensure that their typing skills are sharper than those of non-online students, resulting in better scores overall.

When it comes to GRE mock tests online, one can never be over-prepared. Regardless of whether you have been studying for a few weeks or for a few months, getting more practice will make your life much easier when it comes time to take your real GRE test. So whether you are looking to improve your test score or just want to get an idea of how well you can do on the exam, take as many GRE mock tests as you possibly can.

Frequently asked questions

Is the GRE test difficult?

The difficulty of the GRE depends on the student, and it greatly depends on how well you have prepared for the exam as well as which areas of the exam you are strongest in. You may think one part is difficult while another may not be as difficult to you.

What is considered a good score on the GRE?

GRE scores range from 130 to 170, with the average scores being 151 and 153 in the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections of the exam. The Analytical Writing section is scored on half-point increments from 0 to 6 with an average score of 4.0. Individual graduate schools and business schools often set their own admissions standards and assess applicants' scores differently. Therefore, a good GRE score varies depending on which school you're considering attending.

How many times can you take the GRE test?

To ensure that your test scores are accurate and reliable, you cannot take the GRE more than every 21 days (up to five times during a continuous 365 day period). If you fail the GRE the first time or decide to retake the exam to improve your chances of getting a higher score, waiting ensures that you can focus on studying and preparing for the exam without rushing to reach test day.

Can you fail a GRE test?

It is important to note that you cannot “pass” or “fail” the GRE exam. If you choose to take the GRE, it can be a perfect opportunity to show schools where you are in your studies and how much further you need to go. It is your decision if you want to send the score that you have received to the schools of your choice. Each school has a different cutoff regarding “passing” or “failing.”
