GMAT Online Exam Structure

The GMAT online exam measures the verbal, quantitative, integrated reasoning, and critical thinking skills that are most relevant for graduate business education. This exam is required by nearly every business school around the world for admission into MBA programs. The GMAT online exam is tailored to help you obtain your goals of studying at a business school to acquire more skills and pursue your dream careers.

The GMAT exam is carefully designed and thoroughly researched to assess the skills that you will need to excel in an MBA program. The skills measured by the GMAT exam are Integrated Reasoning and Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning skills.

The GMAT measures verbal, mathematical, and analytical writing skills acquired over a long period of time. Some questions you haven’t tried before, but many are based on what you learned in high school, college, and graduate school.

GMAT Online vs GMAT test center

GMAT candidates have a choice of taking the GMAT online or in-person at a test center. The online GMAT is increasingly becoming more aligned to the test center version, with many of the same features and conveniences. Rest assured, with over 45,000 exams taken since April 2020, and students living in more than 150 countries, territories, and special administrative regions across the world have taken advantage of the flexible online exam format. As both forms are highly similar in look feel and delivery, most business schools do not differentiate between which form was used in admissions decisions. While some may prefer to take an exam in person; others will find that the flexibility of the online format is a better option for them.

From highlighting notes and using scratch paper to using a physical whiteboard, the GMAT Online Exam provides you with all of the tools you would have access to during an in-person test. We consistently compare test results between the online and test center versions of the exam and adjust scoring as needed to ensure there is no difference based on how you take the test. Just be sure that your computer meets our technical specifications so you don't run into any problems when it comes time to test.

The GMAT Online Exam, the at-home version of the top business school admission test, now includes the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA), the GMAT essay section, previously only part of the traditional test center GMAT. The move comes as the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the owner and administrator of the GMAT, makes the GMAT Online Exam a permanent testing option, with registration for testing appointments for the enhanced GMAT Online now available.

GMAT Online Scoring

The GMAT online exam is delivered in two sessions. The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections are scored on a score scale of 0-60, where 60 represents the highest possible score. Each section is scored from 0 to 60. Your total score, which is the sum of the Verbal Reasoning section and the Quantitative section is marked on a 200-800 score scale, with a 10 point increment.

The Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) section is scored on a scale of 0 to 6 points in half-point increments by at least two trained graders, who will each read and score your response independently. The AWA will be graded by an automated scoring system that produces a preliminary AWA score that you will see when you complete the exam and your AWA essay will also be reviewed by at least one faculty member of the graduate management admission council. Your final AWA score will be determined by taking the average of these two human scores.

The GMAT scorecard includes your contact information and information about the sections of the test that were administered, as well as performance information such as your overall score, overall percentiles, and subscore percentiles. The official scorecard is sent to you and the five schools of your choice. Unofficial scores are available in your MBA account seven days after the test date, and official scores are available approximately 20 days after the test date. To send scores to additional recipients, log in to your MBA account at any time.
